CHAPTER 11

It was the following day when Lucy and I stopped by Jordan Taylor’s house. If what Deanna had said about Jordan being bitter about the inheritance was true, then I wanted to see if we could get any information out of him.

I knew Taylor, but I didn’t know his wife very well, and when I spotted a car in the driveway, I decided to take a chance. I had made strawberry cupcakes the day before and thought I would bring some over to them.

“These cupcakes smell so good,” Lucy said as we stood on the porch, waiting for someone to answer the door.

“Thanks. That’s the recipe I used for Lilly’s smash cake.” I’d baked the cakes for her party and popped them into the freezer until I was ready to frost them for the party. The cupcakes were a bonus.

When the door opened, Jordan’s wife looked first surprised to see us and then confused. “Yes? Can I help you?”

I smiled for all I was worth. I needed to get inside to talk to her. “Good morning. Is Jordan home?”

Her brow furrowed. “Jordan? Why?”

I held up the box of cupcakes. “I’m so sorry, we don’t mean to impose. I was hoping Jordan would be home. I knew his great Aunt Daisy, and I just heard that she passed away. She was such a sweet woman, and I knew he must be missing her, so I made some strawberry cupcakes and brought them by. My name is Allie Blanchard, and this is my friend Lucy Gray. I think I’ve seen you at the craft store.”

“Hello,” Lucy said, smiling. “Daisy was a sweet woman. I’m so sorry for your loss.”

She seemed to relax now and nodded. “Oh, yes, poor Aunt Daisy. She was the sweetest woman ever. I still can’t believe that she made it to 102. She was in such good health. I told my husband that I thought she might make it to 110, but the poor thing just didn’t quite make it.”

I nodded. “She was the sweetest woman. She always seemed so happy and full of energy. Well, I guess as much energy as a 102-year-old woman can muster. But she didn’t use a walker or a cane, and you’re right, I would have sworn she would have made it a few more years.”

“She really was the sweetest person,” Lucy echoed. “Isn’t your name Alicia? I’ve talked to you at the craft store, too.”

Alicia brightened. “You bought some green yarn for a knitting project a couple of weeks ago, didn’t you?”

Lucy chuckled. “Sure did. And someday I’ll get to it, too.”

Alicia laughed.

“So anyway, I was doing a little baking and thought I would bring some cupcakes by. Jordan wouldn’t happen to be home, would he?” I asked.

She shook her head, her blond hair bouncing with the movement. “No, he’s at work. That was sweet of you to think of us and make some cupcakes. Would you like to come in for coffee? We could have a cupcake.”

I nodded, trying not to seem too eager.
